Drop Shadow Fern Stencil Card with Black Ink

A striking card using the fern stencil with a drop shadow technique in two layers. The first layer is stencilled in teal, then repositioned slightly and stencilled again in black to create a dimensional shadow effect.

Step by step

1. Place the fern stencil onto your card stock and secure it with a glass mat or grip mat. ▶ watch 23:45
2. Apply teal ink through the stencil using a brush, working the colour into all the recesses. ▶ watch 24:00
3. Carefully lift away the stencil to reveal the teal fern design. ▶ watch 24:30
4. Reposition the stencil slightly down and to the right (or in your chosen shadow direction). ▶ watch 25:00
5. Apply black ink through the stencil in the same way to create the shadow layer. ▶ watch 25:45
6. Lift the stencil to reveal the drop shadow effect. ▶ watch 26:15
7. Mount the card onto a coordinating base card. ▶ watch 26:45
8. Add a washi tape sentiment strip to complete the card. ▶ watch 27:15

Tips from the show

• Only shift the stencil slightly in one direction (down, left, right or up) to create a drop shadow, not all over.
• The fern stencil is repositionable, so you can adjust if you are not happy with the placement.
• Stencilling onto patterned paper gives you layers and texture without the need for blending.
