Stand Tall Sentiment Card with Grey Halo Effect

A card featuring a focal floral image with a subtle grey outline halo that creates a 3D appearance without dimensional layers. This technique gives the illusion of depth while keeping the card flat.

Step by step

1. Stamp your focal floral image (such as buttercups) onto your card in black ink. ▶ watch 45:45
2. Colour the floral design using watercolour or your preferred colouring medium. ▶ watch 46:00
3. Prepare a grey ink pad or grey alcohol marker for the halo effect. ▶ watch 46:30
4. Using a fine brush or marker, carefully paint a thin grey outline around the entire floral image. ▶ watch 46:45
5. Allow the grey outline to dry completely—it will dry back lighter than it appears when wet. ▶ watch 47:00
6. Add your chosen sentiment stamp to complete the card. ▶ watch 47:15

Tips from the show

• Watercolour always dries about two shades lighter, so don't worry if the grey outline looks too dark initially.
• This technique creates a 3D appearance without adding bulk to your card.
• A fine-tipped brush or grey alcohol marker works best for creating a clean, precise halo outline.
