Scrap Card Mosaic Panel with Gold Embossed Grout

A project from our live show CATCH UP with Simon for Monday Madness in the How To Craft Network Studios 20th Sept 21 · 09/20/2021 · watch it from 25:30

A striking background panel made from colourful card scraps arranged in a brick or random pattern with gaps between each piece, then enhanced with gold embossing powder in the gaps to create a tiled, grout-like effect. Perfect for using up leftover card and creating a masculine, feminine or children's card depending on colour choice.

Step by step

  1. Cut card scraps into 1-inch strips, each 3 inches long, using a paper trimmer for consistency. ▶ watch 26:45
  2. Prepare a double-sided adhesive sheet pre-stuck to a piece of card, then peel away the backing to reveal the sticky surface. ▶ watch 27:45
  3. Arrange the first card strip onto the sticky surface, leaving a deliberate gap between it and the edge. ▶ watch 28:15
  4. Continue adding strips in varying colours and tones, rotating the direction and leaving consistent gaps between each piece to create a brick or random pattern. ▶ watch 28:45
  5. Fill any remaining gaps with smaller leftover scraps, adjusting the pattern as you go. ▶ watch 29:45
  6. Trim all the protruding edges level with the card base using the back of the card as a guide. ▶ watch 30:30
  7. Sprinkle gold embossing powder generously over the entire panel, making sure it fills all the gaps between the strips. ▶ watch 31:30
  8. Tap off the excess powder and heat emboss, keeping the heat gun slightly higher than normal to avoid the tape wrinkling. ▶ watch 31:45
  9. Stamp a sentiment onto vellum using black ink and emboss with black embossing powder. ▶ watch 34:45
  10. Tear the vellum into a band shape with an uneven edge, tearing downwards slowly for control. ▶ watch 38:45
  11. Secure the vellum band across the panel using double-sided tape, positioning the sentiment in the centre. ▶ watch 39:15
  12. Layer the embossed panel onto a gold glitter card border, then mount onto a black card base. ▶ watch 40:30
  13. Add small black gems around the card as a finishing embellishment. ▶ watch 42:15
