A project from our live show MY PODCAST - Catch my latest updates broadcast 30th March 2026 · 03/30/2026 · watch it from 24:00

Create a stunning card featuring a layered hydrangea flower using stencil and die techniques. The design combines partial die-cutting with a nested frame effect, resulting in a dimensional floral card with a canopy-style top element and coordinating sentiment.

Step by step

  1. Select a layering stencil and die set (such as the Floral Fusion with hydrangea). Gather white card stock and a navy coloured card stock. ▶ watch 27:00
  2. Place stencil number one in the corner of your A4 card for alignment. Use a blending brush and ink pad to apply the first colour layer very lightly across the stencil. ▶ watch 27:30
  3. Align stencil number two and apply the next colour layer, building up the flower gradually with each stencil. ▶ watch 29:00
  4. Continue through stencils three, four and five, layering different colours to create depth and dimension in the hydrangea. Vary your colours from light heather tones to deeper purples and teals for the leaves. ▶ watch 30:45
  5. Once the stencilled image is complete, trim the card to size using a ruler and pencil to mark a straight cutting line. ▶ watch 36:00
  6. Use the largest waste-free die to cut the stencilled image from navy card stock. Nest the next size die inside to create a double frame effect. ▶ watch 37:45
  7. Adhere the largest die-cut frame to your card base, then layer the smaller die-cut frame on top to ground the image. ▶ watch 46:30
  8. Stamp a sentiment (such as 'Thinking of you') onto a small white card stock strip using navy ink, then trim neatly with scissors. ▶ watch 53:45
  9. Adhere the sentiment to your card, positioning it either in the centre, across the design, or at the bottom as preferred. ▶ watch 56:00
  10. Add sparkle and dimension by applying small sequins or sparkles to the centre of the hydrangea flowers using a glue pen. ▶ watch 58:30
