Step by step

  1. Cut your card blank to 6×6 inches and the card front to 5½×5½ inches. ▶ watch 2:30
  2. Die cut a larger heart shape from scrap paper to use as a mask, positioning it roughly where you want your character to hold it. ▶ watch 2:45
  3. Secure the paper heart mask lightly to your card front using glue or low-tack tape. ▶ watch 4:15
  4. Position the oriental fan stencil on your card and hold it down with magnets. ▶ watch 4:30
  5. Pick up redwood ink with a blending brush and use circular motions to apply colour through the stencil, building up the pattern gradually. ▶ watch 4:45
  6. Apply extra pressure over the heart mask area to ensure it doesn't move while stencilling. ▶ watch 5:15
  7. Remove the stencil and use the excess ink on your brush to soften the edges around the heart shape by brushing off gently. ▶ watch 6:00
  8. Stamp your sentiment (such as 'With Love') in the bottom left corner using midnight black ink and a stamping press. ▶ watch 7:30
  9. Assemble your card by gluing the decorated front panel onto the card blank using tape runner and wet glue. ▶ watch 8:45
  10. Stamp the oriental character with the fan onto white card using midnight black ink. ▶ watch 11:15
  11. Watercolour the character using complementary colours: apply pale purple wash to the outfit first, then deepen with darker purple in shadowed areas. ▶ watch 12:30
  12. Add blue watercolour to other garment areas, then apply peachy and red tones to the face for complexion and lips. ▶ watch 14:00
  13. Dry the watercoloured character with a heat gun. ▶ watch 18:45
  14. Fussy cut around the character carefully using large scissors, keeping the cut close to the image and cutting through the hand slits to allow the character to hold the heart. ▶ watch 19:30
  15. Shape the character by curling the body and bending the arm back up for a three-dimensional effect. ▶ watch 21:15
  16. Attach foam pads to the back of the character and a glitter heart die cut. ▶ watch 21:45
