Abstract Tulip Layered Stencil Card with Watercolour Spray Effect

A project from our live show ANYTHING GOES - Join Toni for the show where you decide what happens - Broadcast 22nd MAR 23 · 03/22/2023 · watch it from 23:00

A multi-layered stencil card using four coordinating abstract tulip stencils and a matching die. You create two versions: a clean, simple design with precise stencilling, and an artistic version with water spray to create a watercolour bleed effect around the design.

Step by step

  1. Remove all four numbered stencils from the packet and locate the heart registration marks in the corners of each stencil. ▶ watch 24:15
  2. Place stencil number one on your card and line up the heart marks if you wish to use the registration system for alignment. ▶ watch 24:45
  3. Ink through the four heart registration marks using your chosen ink colour to create a lineup guide on the card. ▶ watch 25:30
  4. Ink through stencil one with pink ink, pressing firmly to transfer the colour through the stencil onto the card. ▶ watch 26:00
  5. Align stencil two using the heart registration marks and ink through with the same pink colour, pressing harder for better coverage. ▶ watch 27:15
  6. Swap to stencil three (the leaves layer) and line up the hearts again, then ink through using green ink. ▶ watch 28:00
  7. Place stencil four (the final layer) on the card, align the hearts, and ink through using teal ink to complete the layered design. ▶ watch 28:45
  8. For the watercolour version, repeat the stencilling process on a fresh card, inking each layer one at a time. ▶ watch 30:45
  9. After inking stencil one, use a spray bottle to mist the inked area lightly with water, allowing the ink to bleed and create a watercolour effect. ▶ watch 32:00
  10. Repeat the water spray technique after inking each subsequent stencil layer, spraying lightly to avoid over-saturating the card. ▶ watch 34:30
  11. Once dry, add gold confetti ink splats across the design using a paintbrush to add extra sparkle and detail. ▶ watch 40:00
  12. Use the coordinating die to cut out the layered design, then mount it onto a contrasting card base to complete the project. ▶ watch 42:15
