Gilded Embossing Folder Effect on Black Cardstock

Create a luxurious gilded or wax seal effect by heat embossing metallic powder onto black cardstock using an embossing folder. The result is a stunning textured, dimensional finish with a crackling embossed appearance that looks like a precious metal seal.

Step by step

1. Cut your black cardstock to fit your embossing folder. ▶ watch 9:45
2. Apply sticky embossing ink pad to the cardstock, pressing down firmly. ▶ watch 10:00
3. Sprinkle metallic gold embossing powder over the inked area and tap off excess. ▶ watch 11:00
4. Heat set the powder with a heat gun until fully melted. ▶ watch 11:30
5. Allow the cardstock to cool completely. ▶ watch 12:00
6. Apply sticky embossing ink again to the same area. ▶ watch 12:30
7. Sprinkle thick embossing powder over the inked area and tap off excess. ▶ watch 12:45
8. Heat set this second layer with the heat gun. ▶ watch 13:00
9. Once cooled, carefully place the cardstock into your embossing folder. ▶ watch 13:15
10. Run the folder through your die-cutting machine with firm pressure. ▶ watch 13:30
11. Open the embossing folder carefully to reveal the debossed gilded effect. ▶ watch 17:15
12. Trim the cardstock edges to remove any uneven borders and reveal the finished effect. ▶ watch 20:30

Tips from the show

• If the embossing folder becomes slightly warped from heat, it will still work for future use.
• If you are unhappy with the result, apply sticky ink again, add more powder, and melt it back smooth to start over.
• Use thick embossing powder to reduce the number of layers needed and speed up the process.
