Hand-Painted Floral Die-Cut Accent Piece

Create a dimensional floral accent by painting pre-cut flower elements with vibrant neon watercolours. This layered piece adds depth and focus to your card design with selective colour and strategic white space.

Step by step

1. Prepare pre-cut floral elements that have been stamped in black ink to separate them from the background. ▶ watch 29:15
2. Spray your neon watercolour paints with water to activate them and prepare for painting. ▶ watch 29:45
3. Paint the leaves of the flowers, deliberately leaving white space on one side or down the centre of each leaf to create a halo effect. ▶ watch 30:00
4. Add colour to the flower petals, again leaving some white areas unpainted for dimension and highlights. ▶ watch 30:30
5. Use a dry brush technique by dragging the brush across the surface to create an acrylic-like scratchy texture on selected areas. ▶ watch 31:00
6. Allow the paint to dry completely before using the piece on your card. ▶ watch 31:30

Tips from the show

• Have the courage to leave white space rather than colouring every element completely; this creates the appearance of light hitting the design.
• A dry brush dragged across the surface creates a lovely acrylic finish similar to professional painting techniques.
