Wet-on-Wet Watercolour Botanical Card with Salt Texture

A project from our live show CATCH UP with Toni for ANYTHING GOES WEDNESDAY 29th Sept 21 · 09/29/2021 · watch it from 4:30

Create a stunning watercolour background using the wet-on-wet technique with a stamped botanical design. The colours blend naturally around the image, creating a soft, artistic effect with textured details from salt crystals.

Step by step

  1. Stamp your botanical design onto watercolour card using grey ink pad. ▶ watch 4:30
  2. Load your wet brush with clean water and paint around the stamped image, staying outside the design lines but not being overly precise. ▶ watch 8:45
  3. Paint water around the entire perimeter of your design, working section by section. ▶ watch 9:00
  4. Mix a green watercolour and drop it into the wet area around your image, allowing the water to disperse the colour naturally. ▶ watch 10:30
  5. Add yellow watercolour into the wet areas, pouncing rather than mixing to create varied colour tones. ▶ watch 11:00
  6. Add darker colour spots into select areas for depth, pouncing gently rather than blending. ▶ watch 12:00
  7. Wet the bottom section around your image and repeat the colour-dropping process with green, yellow and darker tones. ▶ watch 14:00
  8. Sprinkle salt crystals onto the wet watercolour to create texture, then set aside to dry naturally. ▶ watch 15:15
  9. Once dry, gently rub off the salt crystals with your finger to reveal the textured background. ▶ watch 20:45
