Layered Watercolour Rose Card with Sentiment

A project from our live show CATCH UP with Toni for the FRIDAY LAUNCH in the HTCN studio broadcast 22nd Oct 21 · 10/22/2021 · watch it from 19:45

A stunning three-layer rose card using coordinating stamps and dies to create depth and dimension. The layered approach gives an elegant, hand-painted watercolour effect with beautiful shadow detail that makes the flower appear three-dimensional.

Step by step

  1. Select white cardstock and choose your colour palette—pinks for the rose petals and greens for the leaves. ▶ watch 21:30
  2. Ink up the first layer (numbered layer one) with your chosen pink distress ink, applying it to the flower portion of the stamp. ▶ watch 22:00
  3. Ink the green distress ink onto the leaf portions of the same stamp layer. ▶ watch 22:15
  4. Spray the inked stamp lightly with water to create a watercolour finish before stamping onto your white cardstock. ▶ watch 22:30
  5. Clean your stamp and ink up layer two with a different shade of pink and green, then stamp directly on top of layer one, aligning carefully. ▶ watch 23:00
  6. Spray this layer lightly with water again for consistency. ▶ watch 24:00
  7. Ink up layer three (the detail layer) with a darker shade such as mahogany or festive berries for the flowers and a deeper green for the leaves. ▶ watch 24:30
  8. Stamp the final layer on top, aligning it carefully to create the shadow effect that gives the rose dimension. ▶ watch 25:00
  9. Place the coordinating die plate around your finished rose image and run through your die-cutting machine to cut a decorative border with approximately one millimetre around the artwork. ▶ watch 29:00
  10. Adhere the rose to a white top-folding card base using foam pads for dimension. ▶ watch 31:00
  11. Stamp your chosen sentiment (such as 'Be the reason someone smiles today') onto a contrasting cardstock in gold ink. ▶ watch 34:00
  12. Heat-set the sentiment with an embossing gun, then adhere it to the card with foam pads, positioning it to complement the rose. ▶ watch 35:30
