Monochromatic Heat Embossed Dragonfly Card

A striking black and white card featuring a large ornate dragonfly stamped and heat embossed with white powder on black cardstock. The design is layered onto coordinating black backing card with an inspirational sentiment, creating an elegant monochromatic piece with beautiful dimensional detail.

Step by step

1. Take a piece of black cardstock and decide where you want to position the large dragonfly stamp, allowing the design to come slightly off the edge of the card if desired. ▶ watch 1:00
2. Rub an anti-static bag over the black cardstock to prevent embossing powder from sticking to unwanted areas. ▶ watch 1:30
3. Ink up the large dragonfly stamp and stamp down firmly onto the cardstock to pick up all the detail. ▶ watch 1:45
4. Sprinkle white embossing powder over the stamped dragonfly design, covering it completely. ▶ watch 2:15
5. Flick off any excess embossing powder and save it for later use. ▶ watch 2:30
6. Take a second piece of black cardstock and stamp a sentiment from the set in the centre, such as 'Happiness looks gorgeous on you'. ▶ watch 3:00
7. Rub the anti-static bag over this second piece of cardstock as well. ▶ watch 3:30
8. Cover the sentiment stamp with white embossing powder in the same way as the dragonfly. ▶ watch 3:45
9. Warm up your heat tool to temperature before applying it to the embossing powder. ▶ watch 4:30
10. Apply the heat tool to the dragonfly design, chasing the powder until it becomes vibrant and fully set. ▶ watch 4:45
11. Heat set the sentiment piece in the same way until the embossing powder is fully melted and shiny. ▶ watch 5:00
12. Mount the sentiment onto black backing card to create a layered effect, ensuring it is straight. ▶ watch 6:00
13. Adhere the heat embossed dragonfly directly onto the black and white card base, pressing down firmly with cardstock to avoid fingermarks. ▶ watch 6:30
14. Optional: add sequins, gems or other embellishments around the dragonfly wings for extra sparkle and dimension. ▶ watch 7:00

Tips from the show

• Rubbing an anti-static bag over cardstock before heat embossing prevents embossing powder from sticking to unwanted areas.
• Warming up the heat tool before applying it to embossing powder reduces waves and bumps in the cardstock.
• You can add sparkle and create a 3D element by elevating the dragonfly wings with sequins or gems.
