Using a large mandala stamp as your starting point, you add hand-drawn tangled patterns and fine liner details to create a unique, layered artwork. The result is a beautiful, intricate design that looks complex but is achievable for all skill levels.

Step by step

Stamp the mandala design onto an 8 by 8 inch piece of heavyweight cartridge paper in the corner, ensuring the stamp is clean and pressed firmly. ▶ watch 19:45
Use a regular archival fine liner pen to add bubble shapes and curved lines within sections of the stamped mandala, following the existing lines as guides. ▶ watch 22:00
Bring in dual brush pens in colours such as red to add fine lines and fill in selected areas of the design with colour. ▶ watch 23:15
Add watercolour effect by applying water with a brush to blend the dual brush pen colours, allowing them to move naturally across the paper. ▶ watch 24:00
Sprinkle table salt onto wet watercolour areas to create a textured, pitted effect. ▶ watch 26:00
Use a tortilla blending stump to soften pencil shading and create three-dimensional effects around the design. ▶ watch 29:00
Add final details with gel pens in metallic colours such as silver and gold to highlight specific areas and create a layered finish. ▶ watch 30:00

Tips from the show

You can hold a pen and do this—it does not require artistic skill, just the ability to follow lines.
Each piece of artwork you create will be completely unique because you are adding your own details.
You can use just a corner of the stamp on a smaller card rather than filling a whole page.
