Hinge Album with Nested Pages

A project from our live show STUDIO 3 - Industry News - Join Toni LIVE broadcast 9th April · 04/09/2022 · watch it from 23:00

Create a multi-page album using a simple hinge mechanism made from scored card stock. The pages nest inside one another to form a compact, expandable book that can hold photos, memories and embellishments.

Step by step

1. Cut a piece of card stock to approximately 8 inches in length. ▶ watch 23:30
2. Mark three measurement points along the card: 3 inches, 2 inches, and 1 inch. ▶ watch 23:45
3. Use a score tool to score down one side of the card at the 3-inch mark, creating the first hinge. ▶ watch 24:00
4. Turn the card around and score down the other side at the same 3-inch mark to create a matching hinge. ▶ watch 24:15
5. Fold the card along the scored lines to create accordion-style flaps. ▶ watch 24:30
6. Apply glue to the hinge flaps using a glue stick. ▶ watch 28:30
7. Adhere your 8 by 8 inch paper pages to each hinge flap, ensuring they are aligned and level. ▶ watch 29:00
8. Continue adding pages by applying glue to each successive hinge and pressing the next paper page into place. ▶ watch 30:00
9. Score a larger piece of card stock to create a book cover that will house the nested pages. ▶ watch 42:00
10. Insert the hinge assembly into the scored cover so the spine sits in the recess created by the score lines. ▶ watch 42:30

Tips from the show

• Don't worry if your hinge measurements aren't perfectly even—once you've added pages and embellishments, any slight variations won't be visible.
• If your card stock isn't large enough for the full cover, you can extend the front and back pages to cover the gaps, then decorate over them with pattern paper.
• You can incorporate envelope pockets and other embellishments into the gusset space created by the hinges.
