Step by step

  1. Stamp the umbrella lady image onto watercolour card using Versafine (waterproof) black ink. ▶ watch 23:30
  2. Paint the umbrella with your first colour choice (e.g. coral) by dropping colour into the umbrella sections. ▶ watch 25:00
  3. Paint the umbrella with a second colour (e.g. blue) in other sections, allowing colours to blend slightly. ▶ watch 25:45
  4. Dry the image completely. ▶ watch 26:15
  5. Apply a second layer of the first colour to the umbrella, but only down the left and right edges, leaving the centre lighter (glazing). ▶ watch 26:45
  6. Dry again, then apply a third, thinner layer of colour down the edges to build dimension. ▶ watch 27:30
  7. Paint the lady's brown coat, leaving some white space for highlights. ▶ watch 28:15
  8. Paint the skirt with your chosen colour, then add darker layers down the edges and centre crease when dry. ▶ watch 29:45
  9. Paint the belt and add shadow details under the coat. ▶ watch 30:30
  10. Add white watercolour paint to the image to create the effect of snow or rain battering the umbrella and lady. ▶ watch 33:00
  11. Once dry, use a white gel pen to add fine lines across the umbrella to create a three-dimensional wire effect. ▶ watch 35:45
  12. Fussy cut around the lady carefully, keeping the umbrella and coat edges intact. ▶ watch 36:15
