Step by step

  1. Stamp the umbrella three times on white cardstock using black ink, then cut out two of them. ▶ watch 6:00
  2. Colour the two umbrella cut-outs with alcohol markers in three colours (pink, green, and teal), allowing the alcohol to evaporate between layers. ▶ watch 11:00
  3. Layer the alcohol marker colours by filling in areas and adding outlines again to create dimension and shadow effects on the umbrellas. ▶ watch 14:00
  4. Score a five by seven side-folding card and stamp the full image (woman with umbrella) in black ink on the front. ▶ watch 17:30
  5. Open the card out flat and draw a pencil line from the top of the woman's hair to create a cutting guide. ▶ watch 19:45
  6. Use a guillotine to cut down the spine of the card to your pencil line, then turn the card and cut along the pencil line up to the hair. ▶ watch 20:15
  7. Use scissors to carefully cut away the sections you've marked and fussy-cut around the top of the umbrella, leaving a white border. ▶ watch 21:30
  8. Erase the pencil line with an electric eraser. ▶ watch 23:15
  9. Glue patterned paper (such as a check pattern) to the inside back of the card. ▶ watch 23:30
  10. Watercolour the woman's coat in red, her skirt in grey, and add a black belt and shadows using watercolour paints. ▶ watch 25:00
  11. Outline the watercoloured figure with a light grey or blue pen to add definition and make it appear more dimensional. ▶ watch 28:00
  12. Stamp a sentiment in black ink at the side of the card. ▶ watch 30:15
  13. Apply clear glitter glue around the feet of the figure in a puddle shape, adding splashes outward as if she's stepped in a puddle of sparkle. ▶ watch 31:00
  14. Adhere the flat, uncoloured umbrella cut-out first, then layer the coloured umbrella on top using foam pads for dimension. ▶ watch 33:00
  15. Add white gel pen highlights to the coloured umbrella to push back the darker green and add brightness. ▶ watch 34:45
  16. Add glitter or sequins to the puddle area to complete the sparkly effect. ▶ watch 35:45
