Textured Snowflake Tag with Mixed Media Paste

Create a mixed media tag by stencilling through multiple texture pastes to build up dimensional layers. This project demonstrates how to combine crackle, beaded, flock and sable texture pastes with the Gorgeous Snowflake stencil for a richly textured finish.

Step by step

1. Gesso an MDF tag to create a suitable base for your stencil work. ▶ watch 29:15
2. Ink through the Falling Snow stencil using ocean and murder side dye inks onto the gessoed tag. ▶ watch 29:30
3. Secure the Gorgeous Snowflake stencil to your tag with low-tack tape to prevent it shifting. ▶ watch 30:00
4. Apply crackle texture paste through the stencil using a palette knife, spreading it evenly. ▶ watch 30:15
5. Add beaded texture paste through the same stencil in a different area to create gritty snow texture. ▶ watch 30:45
6. Apply flock texture paste through the stencil for a soft, touchable finish. ▶ watch 31:15
7. Finish with sable texture paste, pushing it through the stencil and slightly offsetting it. ▶ watch 31:45
8. Heat set the tag with a heat tool to dry the pastes completely. ▶ watch 32:30
9. Once dry, spray inks over the textured surface using butterscotch and morning mist for colour variation. ▶ watch 33:00
10. Adhere wooden snowflakes and a sentiment to complete the tag. ▶ watch 33:30

Tips from the show

• Mix different texture pastes together for varied effects.
• You can add ink on top of dried texture paste to change the colours.
• Be careful not to overheat the paste with the heat tool or it will bubble and crack.
