A project from our live show FUNKY TUESDAY - FREE WORKSHOP with the Awesome Sarah Gray - Broadcast 30th AUG 22 · 08/30/2022 · watch it from 4:50

An A6 easel card featuring a heat-embossed butterfly cascade that appears to float and fly off the card using acetate. The front panel folds in half to create a platform effect, with individual coloured butterflies suspended on acetate for dimension and movement.

Step by step

  1. Take a pre-scored A6 white card blank and measure 7.4 millimetres along the front to find the halfway point. ▶ watch 5:45
  2. Use a scoreboard to score a fold line across the front panel of the card, creating a crease that will become your easel platform. ▶ watch 6:30
  3. Cut an A6 panel of acetate to place behind your stamped elements, which will allow butterflies to appear to float. ▶ watch 8:15
  4. Stamp the large butterfly flurry cascade image onto an A6 white card panel using acorn-coloured Versafine Claire ink. ▶ watch 9:45
  5. Apply anti-static powder to the stamped image to keep the embossing clean and crisp. ▶ watch 11:00
  6. Heat emboss the butterfly cascade with luxurious chocolate WOW embossing powder, melting it with a heat gun until it has a golden glow. ▶ watch 11:15
  7. Stamp and heat emboss a second panel with the same butterfly cascade image. ▶ watch 13:30
  8. Draw a line 8 centimetres up from the bottom of one embossed panel to mark where you will cut the image. ▶ watch 18:45
  9. Carefully cut along your drawn line and around the butterfly shapes using small scissors, leaving white space around the cascade to keep it as one piece. ▶ watch 21:30
  10. Activate confetti inks by spritzing water into the lid, then use a brush to add colour to selected butterflies above your cut line, creating a watercolour effect on the embossed surface. ▶ watch 23:45
  11. Cut out two individual coloured butterflies from the second embossed panel to use as floating elements. ▶ watch 26:30
  12. Ink the bottom panel of your card base with antique linen and ground espresso blending ink, fading the colour as it moves upward. ▶ watch 30:15
  13. Use a butterfly stencil with ground espresso ink to add distressed detail to the bottom panel, keeping the stencilling pale so it does not compete with other elements. ▶ watch 34:30
  14. Adhere the acetate panel to the back of your cut butterfly cascade using wet glue on the folded front panel. ▶ watch 37:45
  15. Attach the two individual coloured butterflies to the acetate using small dots of glue, positioning them to appear as if flying upward. ▶ watch 40:00
  16. Adhere your inked bottom panel to the card base. ▶ watch 41:30
